What is Smallbore Rifle Shooting?
Smallbore shooting has a long history in Missoula, MT. Smallbore matches have been held in Missoula for more than 100 years. Smallbore shooting generally consists of rimfire, standard velocity, 22 caliber ammunition fired through a long rifle. Smallbore competition can be in the prone position or in 3 or 4 position. Position shooting consists of prone, standing, sitting and kneeling in a four-position match. A three-position match consists of prone, standing and kneeling on a metric or internationals target. Prone matches are held outdoors and consist of targets at 50 yards, 100 yards and 50 meters.
Where Can I Participate in Smallbore Rifle Matches?
HCSA smallbore matches are held both indoor at our West Riverside range or outdoor on our 100-yard range also in West Riverside.
While smallbore shooting is a lifetime sport, most smallbore shooters began the sport as junior shooters, generally in their teenage years. Some embrace collegiate shooting, a few with scholarships. There are a wide range of smallbore matches such as local, state, national, NCAA and Olympic games.
Air rifle competition has supplemented smallbore shooting and is gaining popularity due to a lower costs and more flexible range requirements. It is only fired on indoor ranges.
Computer software with a scanner is the preferred choice to score targets. This process takes about 2 seconds to score each target resulting is more efficient scoring and posting of scores.
